I would like to wish all my supporters, collectors and friends a very happy Valentine's Day, I would like to use the day to also think about loneliness because it is a "pressing health threat". Research has shown that loneliness is as bad for people's health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Equally, people who are lonely sometimes feel shame and associate loneliness with not being likeable. Of course this is not the reality.

As a disabled woman, an ethnic minority and working class, I have often been in that place where I have felt non-likeable. It is not a good place to be. Even when I was in this very dark hole, I still received Valentine's gifts. I remember one year I advertised in the editorial of the Student Union Rag mag at FE college, that I was waiting for my 12 red roses - that year I had over 20 bunches of red roses on my doorstep, and even more were dropped off to the market stall where I worked. I was 16, flattered and very honoured to receive such gifts, even if they were part in jest. The moral to this story is we don’t need any one to ask, we should just look around us and find a way to give as people need recognition.

To put my sixteen-year-old self in context, I had lost my father to cancer the year before after a 3 year illness, spent entirely in hospital; I had lost a school friend to glandular fever; my uncle to suicide; another uncle to Parkinsons disease; and so the list went on. My younger self was not protected from experiencing death, nor the questions of mortality that brings. Then later on in that same year my close friend Brian was stabbed to death in the street, for no reason other than he was saving someone else's life, as our friend Paul was wearing the wrong coat and the person wanted to kill him and not Brian. As a teenager this all had a very profound effect on me and shaped who I am. Today many young people just like me are dragged into the experience and the aftershock of such horrific and senseless acts. I want to express my sympathy to all who are unfortunately caught up in these horrific situations.

So let’s take the Valentine’s lead and make February about love, affection and compassion
I like to think about all the different forms of love and companionship, which can be with your pet as well as a human. Many people have companion pets. Children learn compassion and love with animals. We have a different love for our parents, our children, our friends, our relatives and then our lovers! That's a ‘whole lot of love’ but we all know life is complex and not all situations are harmonious, especially in families, so who would you most like to receive a card from – and who would you give a card to? It’s the acknowledgment that counts! Would you send a card to child who needs to know you care, an older relative who is now living alone? It’s a question, should Valentine’s Day just be about romantic love?
