I painted disabled journalist John Pring, who's an editor and founder of Disability News Services as part of my commissioned project Portraits of Everyday Activists. I decided to include newspaper cuttings into his portrait to symbolise his profession. He broke the story about the record number of disabled people who dies due to sanctions by the DWP.
It was commissioned by Disability Arts Online in 2020

When I met Jess, in her garden, she had so much energy! I wanted to celebrate her generosity by creating two portraits of her.
As a disabled artist herself, she has had multiple multidisciplinary projects funded by the Arts Council England.

I've known Penny Pepper for a very long time, we are both Punk Rockers! She has done ground breaking work for people in the disability movement. She an author, journalist and a disabled activist.
Penny is incredibly humorous and tells stories that make people see the world differently. She has a number of published books, which I highly recommend.

Sue is a disabled activist who famously chained herself to busses in the 80s and 90s. It made sense to her to do this, because, as she said, we can put people on the moon, but not disabled people on a bus.
In this painting I have collaged 2 astronauts and if you look very closely, I've made sure the reflection in the visors is that of a film studio to reference the fact that some people don't believe that we've gone to the moon.

Katherine was a friend of mine for a very long time. She was a performance artist.
In the mid 90's I wrote a poem called "My cunt blushes", she heard me read it. She ran with that idea and fully embraced it in her own performances about sexuality.
We had a very similar approach to some of our work and critiqued each other's art a lot. I miss these conversations and I miss her as a sounding board.

I was astonished that he chose not to leave Ukraine, when offered by America. He's quite unique as a leader. He doesn't come from a political background and is learning on the job. Yet he got thrown in this incredibly complex situation.
And that's why I painted him.
