Michelle Baharier featured on Disability Arts Online

Reflecting on a year-long London–New York collaboration led by Fountain House Gallery with Bethlem Royal Hospital in London, UK, exploring creativity, connection and coming out of isolation.

South East London artist Michelle Baharier has been featured on Disability Arts Online, the UK's leading platform for disability arts and lived-experience practice. In a first-person piece for the publication, Baharier reflects on Unfurling: Coming Out of Isolation, the year-long London–New York collaboration behind the twin exhibitions now showing at Bethlem Gallery in London and Fountain House Gallery in New York.

 

The feature traces how a chance meeting between two artists grew into an international programme, with more than twenty artists meeting online every Saturday for a year to make work exploring isolation, connection and what it means to re-enter the world. Baharier describes the process as a liberating one, and speaks openly about creativity, mental health and the community that formed across the Atlantic — much of it between artists who had never met in person.
